April 24 is National Drug Take-Back Day

Document

The Little Elm Police Department Drug Take-Back Day is scheduled on Saturday, April 24, 2021, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Little Elm Public Safety Building located at 88 W. Eldorado Parkway, Little Elm, TX 75068.

The National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day is a national program put on by the United States Drug Enforcement Agency and local police departments across the country. The program aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs. An additional goal of the program is to educate the general public about the potential for abuse of medications.

According to the 2016 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 6.2 million Americans misused controlled prescription drugs. The results of the study also found that the majority of abused prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends, and very often from the home medicine cabinet.

The Little Elm Police Department partners with local pharmacies to take back unwanted, used, and expired medications. Medications accepted during National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day include ointments or creams, injectables, liquids, and controlled substances, including narcotic pain medications. Medications not accepted include medications under pressure, such as inhalers, and syringes/sharps.

National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day takes place both in the spring and the fall.
